USG Guided Biopsy is an image-guided procedure in which a small core of tissue is removed from an organ or lesion using a thin Tru-cut needle, with continuous ultrasound vision to guide the needle precisely to the target. The tissue is then sent for histopathology — the gold-standard test to diagnose tumours, infections and other diseases. At our Bathinda clinic we perform USG guided biopsy of the liver, kidney, lung, breast and soft-tissue lesions under local anaesthesia, as a same-day procedure.
Common Indications
- Liver biopsy — for chronic liver disease, suspected liver tumour, unexplained LFT abnormalities
- Kidney biopsy — for nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, renal mass
- Lung / pleural biopsy — for peripheral lung mass, pleural thickening
- Breast core biopsy — for BIRADS 4-5 lesions
- Soft-tissue / muscle biopsy — for sarcoma work-up
- Lymph node and abdominal mass biopsy
How USG Guided Biopsy Is Performed
- Pre-procedure check: PT/INR, platelet count and recent imaging are reviewed.
- You lie on the procedure couch in a comfortable position.
- The skin is cleaned and local anaesthesia is given at the needle site.
- Under continuous ultrasound vision, a coaxial Tru-cut needle is advanced into the lesion.
- 2-4 cores of tissue are taken — each pass takes only a couple of seconds.
- The needle is removed, a small dressing is applied, and you rest in the observation area for 1-2 hours.
- Most patients are discharged the same day with a written report.
Pre-Procedure Preparation
- Bring all previous imaging (USG, CT, MRI) and blood reports
- Stop blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin) 5-7 days before — only on your physician's advice
- 4-6 hours fasting is required for liver and kidney biopsy
- Have a relative accompany you on the day of the procedure
Safety & Recovery
USG guided biopsy is very safe in trained hands. Minor bruising or soreness at the puncture site is common and resolves in 1-2 days. Significant bleeding is rare (< 1%). You can resume light activity the next day; avoid heavy lifting and exercise for a week. Histopathology report is usually ready in 4-7 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is biopsy painful?
Local anaesthesia numbs the skin completely. You will feel a mild push during the needle pass but no sharp pain.
Will I be admitted?
Most USG guided biopsies are day-care procedures. You go home after 1-2 hours of observation. Liver biopsies sometimes require a short half-day stay.
How accurate is the result?
USG guided core biopsy provides a tissue diagnosis with over 95% diagnostic accuracy when adequate cores are obtained.
Is it covered by insurance?
Yes, when clinically indicated, USG guided biopsy is covered by most TPA and health insurance panels.
