Bleeding Varicose Vein: First Aid and Medical Care

A bleeding varicose vein needs urgent attention. Follow simple first-aid steps while arranging medical help.

Bleeding Varicose Vein: First Aid and Medical Care

What to do immediately

If a visible leg vein starts bleeding, lie down if possible and raise the leg above the level of your heart. Apply firm, continuous direct pressure to the bleeding point with a clean pad or cloth. Keep pressure in place while another person arranges urgent medical help.

If bleeding is heavy, does not stop, or you feel weak, faint or unwell, seek emergency care. Do not stand up to inspect the wound repeatedly, wrap a tight band around the leg, or drive yourself if you feel faint.

Why follow-up matters even after bleeding stops

A small skin injury over a raised vein can bleed more than expected. The fact that pressure stopped the bleeding does not identify the underlying vein problem or remove the chance that it may happen again.

NICE recommends immediate referral to a vascular service for bleeding varicose veins. Arrange a prompt clinical review after the episode and tell the clinician what happened, how long bleeding lasted and whether it has happened before.

What not to do

Do not apply unverified powders, herbal products or creams into an open wound. Do not remove a dressing that has become stuck; seek medical advice. If you take blood-thinning medicine, tell the emergency team and do not stop or change a prescribed dose on your own.

A routine blog or appointment form is not a substitute for urgent care when bleeding is active. Once the immediate episode is controlled, a clinician can assess the vein and discuss whether further testing or treatment is appropriate.

Reduce the chance of another episode

Until you have been assessed, protect fragile skin from knocks and follow wound-care advice from a healthcare professional. Ask the clinician whether a dressing, skin care plan or vein assessment is needed. The right next step depends on the location of the vein, the skin and your overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wait for a regular appointment if a varicose vein is bleeding?

No. Apply direct pressure, raise the leg and seek urgent medical care. NICE advises immediate referral for bleeding varicose veins.

What if the bleeding stops after pressure?

Arrange prompt clinical follow-up. A stopped bleed still needs assessment to understand the cause and reduce the risk of another episode.
